Slieve Donard Ravens September 2021

Slieve Donard Ravens September 2021

While on staycation in Newcastle, Co. Down in September 2021, I challenged myself to climb Northern Ireland's highest Peak - Slieve Donard in the Mourne Mountains.

This is an 850 metre ascent and the highest peak in Northern Ireland.

It wasn't easy, but it was worth the effort.

A special bonus for me were the ravens flying about above my head. I took some video footage of them and only found out later that 5 months previous their nest with chicks inside was in danger from a fire. Local conservationists at the time were very worried that the Ravens might not survive the blaze which ripped through 3.5 km of land. Happily, they did and I was able to enjoy them on my visit.

I could have watched them all day.

I know that ravens (and other members of the corvid family like crows and magpies) are not the most popular. But, I'm a bit of a fan of these birds. I especially love the cheeky mannerisms of crows and magpies.

The crow and the raven feature strongly in Irish mythology, being associated with the goddess Morrigan and also the bean sidhe (Banshee).

This calm photo belies wery windy and cold conditions.
